Library rights and regulations

There are lots of benefits for students using the College Library, and a few rules we ask students to follow.

Benefits

  • 9am-5pm access to the Wren Library on weekdays (and 9am-1pm on Saturdays in term time), with up to 5 guests at a time (great for a first date, or to impress a potential one!) All of the details are available here.
  • Borrowing rights for up to 20 items at a time
  • Students are able to place requests for books to be bought for the library which, if approved, can often arrive within 24 hours
  • Students can reserve books in the Reading Room for up to 24 hours by filling in a reserve slip (it must be noted, however, that leaving belongings unattended for long periods is not permitted, as this takes spaces away from others who may need it).

Rules

  • Care of books: please do not mark or dog-ear Library books as you may incur a replacement charge.
  • If you lose a book, please inform the Library as soon as possible so that we can buy a replacement copy.
  • Food and drink: hot and cold drinks are permitted in sealable containers only (no single-use cups). No food is permitted in the Library.
  • Smoking is not permitted in the Library.
  • Quiet study: the Reading Room and Lower Library are quiet study spaces. Please refrain from talking or whispering, and please keep personal devices on silent mode.
  • Returns and recalls: students are able to renew books up to three times online, unless a recall request has been made. Books are also required to be returned at the beginning of each term, in which case online renewals are disabled. In the case that books are not returned on time, students will accrue fines at the rate of £0.50 per item and per day.
  • Lost property: personal items left in the Library will typically be kept either at the Enquiry Desk or on the lost property trolley in the Reading Room. These will be kept for one month before being disposed of. Any valuable items are handed in to the Porters’ Lodge.
  • CCTV: The Library is under CCTV surveillance. Images are monitored for the purpose of crime prevention under a scheme operated by Trinity College, Cambridge. For further information contact (01223) 338400.
